A rainscreen creates drainage and drying space
In addition to the weather-resistive barrier (WRB) wall preparation, there are additional steps that can protect the building from moisture, known as a rainscreen. Rainscreens create a physical airspace behind the cladding, making a larger path for drainage. It also creates space for ventilation air to dry the wall assemble. Drainage and drying combine to increase durability.
Rainscreen, detailed properly with drainage and ventilation, the gap can provide a ventilation drying effect. This strategy can address incidental water from rain, condensation, or residual construction moisture.
When this strategy is implemented, the building code allows the elimination of the sacrificial layer of the water-resistive barrier. To take advantage, the primary water-resistant barrier must be 60-minute building paper or equivalent.
