A Roundup of Flashing Tapes and Sealants You Should Know About

On International Flashing Awareness Day, Aron Jones surveyed some flashing products he likes (#Internationalflashingawarenessday)
September 30, 2024

This short video features Aron Jones of Big Dog Construction showing some of the many flashing tapes and sealants available to builders and remodelers who want to do things the right way. Shot on International Flashing Awareness Day, Aron looks mostly at window flashing solutions but sneaks in some roof goop at the end.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT:

SIGA of North America has these pre-made gray RISSAN corners. I believe the gray RISSAN tape that goes with it is available in the US, but it's not available in Canada just quite yet. They also have great flashing tape and a liquid flash that I do not have here.

A little-known fact: Dymonic 100, which is from Tremco and has been a sealant staple in the industry for quite some time, can be used as a liquid flash.

Benjamin Opdyke has some really great products available. Hydro Flash UV is just one of their tapes, and the other Hydro Flash tapes are excellent as well. I'm a big fan of the Hydro Flash liquid applied—mostly because of the color; everybody loves that color.

Vicor makes some really amazing flashing tapes as well. They also make a liquid flash.

My good friends at HuberWood make their Zip System flashing tapes and Zip System liquid flashing. They really have a flashing solution for just about everything, including their stretch tape, which everybody knows I'm a big fan of.

3M has been making amazing flashing tapes and adhesives for a lot of other flashing tape companies for a very long time. They've got some really solid stuff.

This is flashing tape left over from VP100 or VP160; it's a vapor-permeable flashing tape. Henry Blueskin also makes good products.

My good friends at Sashco, while they don't necessarily make flashing tape, make sealants, which are sometimes one of the first steps for a proper window install.

For example, Lexel: before I install my window, after I've got the opening flashed, my first step is to take Lexel and do a U-bead around the opening. Through the Roof is another product I've literally been using for decades, like for quick patches on the roof in the rain. It's also great for ensuring things are done right the first time. Through the Roof is excellent for installing any penetrations to a roof because the first thing you need on any building to keep water out is a good roof.
